idea: checkers, not chess

The Kingdom of Sixty-Four Squares

The wood grain worn beneath my hand,
a map etched not in stone, but sand
of humble squares, a checkered plain,
where battles pause and fortunes reign.
Not the grand, silent siege of kings,
no labyrinth where future sings,
but checkers, simple, sharp, and true,
the history of me and you.

The board lies waiting, pale and wide,
where every move is staked and tied.
A kingdom built on black and white,
a focused gleam of inner light.
The pieces sit in ordered rows,
a silent army, how it goes—
The kings and men, the simple few,
defined by what they must do.

They click and slide across the space,
a frantic rhythm, time and pace.
A pawn advances, swift and sure,
a promise whispered, to endure.
The jumping fear, the sudden leap,
the careful tactics that I keep;
A diagonal threat, a risky plea,
a sharp geometry for me.

Oh, the tension when the colors clash,
a moment frozen in a dash.
The line drawn thin, the risk defined,
the anxious waiting of the mind.
The little clicks become the sound,
as strategy is tightly bound;
No empty thought, no wandering eye,
just pure intent beneath the sky.

It isn’t strategy of crowns,
no complex politics of towns,
but simple choices, clear and fast,
a moment built that’s meant to last.
The game demands a steady grace,
a focus held within this space;
A rhythm learned by heart and hand,
the finest kingdom in the land.

We learned the rule, we learned the art,
to play a battle in the heart.
It taught us patience, slow and deep,
the quiet promise that we keep.
For though the board may look so small,
it holds the worth of one and all;
A memory warm and sweet,
of friendly rivalry and treat.

So let the grander games take flight,
and let the puzzles gleam with light;
There is a wisdom in this play,
that settles worries and the fray.
It’s not the victory that we seek,
but finding beauty where we speak,
In simple lines, in earnest strife,
the honest measure of a life.
And oh, how sweetly we recall,
the simple joy behind it all.
